Wines are for Breakfast too

We often think a juice and sparkling wine combination is the only choice we have for those summer breakfast brunch events; however, wine can be a perfect paring choice.

Here are some thoughts and suggestions.

One of my family’s favorite special beginning foods is Biscuits & Gravy. This delicious gooey gravy on top of fluffy fresh out of the oven biscuits is beautiful with a Barbera or Cabernet Franc. The acid and tannins in the wine helps breakdown the fats in the dish, just like it does with a steak. The flavors in the wine complement the savory flavors found in sausages. Serve the wine a bit colder than normal.

Blueberry Pancakes pair beautifully with Moscato d’Asti, a perfect pancake wine. Are bacon, eggs, and French toast on the menu? Grab a dry Riesling to compliment the saltiness of the bacon and the sweetness of the syrup for the French toast. Breakfast burritos are among America’s favorite morning foods and the right wine will make it even better. Look for an earthy red wine, such as a Tempranillo or Sangiovese. Does your menu include yogurt and fruit? A Gewurztraminer or Muscat pairs well with the tropical notes found in the wine.

So, do not think your only options for brunch are Mimosas or Champagne. Think wine, think of the flavors found in wine and the flavors of your menu whether breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Enjoy!
